Symantec Vulnerability Research has posted a new security advisory on a new Treo data vulnerability. The researchers have found a method to bypass the Treo system password and locking mechanism using the find feature.

Palm OS Treo smartphones are equipped with a system password lock to secure contents of handheld data from unauthorized access. When this lock is engaged, Treo's built-in Find feature is still accessible and can be used to perform searches on text in Treo applications and databases (e.g. SMS Messages, Memos, Calendar, Tasks, etc). Search results are accessible, and depending on their size, may be truncated. An attacker may use this vulnerability to retrieve information from a locked device.
Cingular Branded Colored Treo 680's Soon

Palm has updated its and is no longer selling the unlocked Treo 680 colored versions. Instead only the Graphite Treo 680 model is available to be purchased unlocked and without a contract. The store also notes that the colored version will shortly be sold with Cingular service from Palm.com, while the colored versions will no longer be available unlocked.
A posted by Palm on the 680 product page states:
Effective February 15, Palm will begin selling Cingular-branded Treo 680 models in crimson, arctic and copper colors. Previously, those colored models were available only in unlocked versions from Palm. The unlocked Treo 680 graphite version will continue to be sold in the United States.

Palm Unofficially Announces Treo 750 WM6 Upgrade

Pieter Knook, Microsoft's Senior Vice President, Mobile and Embedded Devices division, unofficially announced today that a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade was forthcoming for Palm's Treo 750. The comment was made during a of the Microsoft 3GSM press conference in Barcelona, Spain.
The actual comment regarding the Treo 750 occured between 28:13 and 28:26 of Mr. Knook's talk. The Palm/Treo reference was quite brief and occurred during a rundown of Microsoft's handset partners. Being a very unofficial announcement, no details of the upgrade, such as pricing or availability, was announced. Palm's logo and branding, as well as the actual Treo 750 itself, was prominently displayed throughout the course of the Microsoft presentation.

Treo 750 spotted running Windows Mobile 6

A MobilitySite.com user two photos of what looks to be a Treo 750 running a beta build of Windows Mobile 6. The shots are of quite decent quality and clearly show the About screen indicating revision 5.2.1208 of the OS, beta build 17708.0.2.0 The About screen shows the standard 300mhz CPU and 48.93mb of memory so it appears the OS is running on a standard spec 750.
If this is not a hoax, Palm could have an OS update waiting in the wings for their flagship Treo device. Or else, Palm could be readying a mildly refreshed Treo 750 to be brought quickly to market as its first WinMob 6 device.

The Palm Treo has security flaws. Since the article is named "Palm Treos..." I must believe it's not the Windows Treo that is being discussed. Three versions of the smart phone carry vulnerabilities that could allow access to data even when the device is locked.
